November Garden Tips

November is the beginning of a new garden year, so now is the time to plant or move deciduous shrubs and trees. Evergreens come into their own once all the leaves have been shed . Evergreens may be gold red or even blue, not just green, and have leaves of wonderful shapes and textures.

LAWNS
Continue to mow but remember to vary the blade height according to the weather, not too low if we have a dry spell. Keep off the lawn as best as possible. Evenly spread sand to protect slippery areas. Remove dead leaves and it is your last chance to lay any turf.

PLANTING
Trees, shrubs, roses and new hedging. Don’t forget to stake newly planted trees or shrubs to protect against wind and heavy rain. Renovate old trees and take hardwood cuttings once the leaves have fallen  Sow seeds from hardy shrubs. Don’t forget fruit trees for next year.
Plant tulips and hyacinths as well as lily bulbs and last chance for daffodils. Remove dead leaves from established plants.  Dig up dahlias.  Protect young plants from rain and cold winds.

PATIOS & DECKING
Decking is taking its share of water damage this year. Make sure to keep them clean and free from algae which is thriving in the damp. A nasty fall on slippery surfaces is not what you want . Power hose the deck and re oil whenever you get  a dry afternoon .  Protect pots and container plants from wind, rain and possible frost.

VEGETABLES
Plant garlic.  Harvest any vegetables as soon as they are ready.  Don’t forget the herbs dill and chervil can be sown now. Dig up and store root vegetables by mid November.

WINTERISE  YOUR GARDEN
Start with winter digging and forking over bare flower beds and veg patches, but only when soil is dry and not too cold.  Pick up leaves and fallen debris for composting. Protect shrubs and plants from cold winds and keep an eye for frost. Remember squirrels may be foraging for food and will dig up bulbs so use some wire netting.
